Abstract

This article aims to discuss the role of cassava flour in the Atlantic history, highlighting the quilombola territory in Itacaré, in the South of Bahia. The chronological landmarks are 2006, when the certifications of quilombola communities by the Palmares Cultural Foundation began, and 2023, considering the recent acquisitions of cassava flour by the Municipal Department of Education. As sources, we conducted interviews and used the Official Gazette of the Municipality and the Public Call for Proposals for the acquisition of foodstuffs. We work with the concept of the Quilombista State proposed by Abdias Nascimento (1980). We conclude that this tuber, which contributed so much to the Atlantic dynamics in the past, still contributes to the human and economic occupation of the quilombola territory in Itacaré, and that work, in the Quilombista State, is above all a form of human liberation that citizens enjoy as a right and a social obligation.
