CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE UN SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON THE ELIMINATION OF DISCRIMINATION AGAINST PERSONS AFFECTED BY LEPROSY TO THE TOPIC OF PATIENT REHABILITATION IN BRAZIL

Due to the numerous segregationist practices applied to people affected by leprosy in the 20th century and the persistent iatrogenic stigma still entrenched in society, leprosy patients and their families find themselves in a vulnerable situation in the country. In this sense, late diagnosis of the disease is a reality in Brazil, and combined with social and institutional barriers, it leads to a series of physical and psychological injuries in leprosy patients and former patients. Therefore, this article, as partial results of the author's master's thesis research, aims to present the contributions of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Persons Affected by Leprosy and Their Families for the rehabilitation of physical and psychological injuries resulting from the late diagnosis of the disease. The methodology of this work is based on the documentary analysis of the annual reports produced by this Special Rapporteur. The article concludes that it is possible to find guidelines in the mentioned documents for seeking rehabilitation measures for injuries resulting from late diagnosis of leprosy for patients in Brazil.
