Abstract

Abstract: This article presents the catholic lay organizations during the XVIII century as institutions capable to organize socially and economically the villages and their surroundings, from regimentation of social groups around specific devotion. Therefore, we intend to analyze those institutions as spaces of struggle and social distinction, but at the same time dampening conflicts and contributing to social and economic rise of its members. Thus, we dedicate our analysis on the Irmandade do Santíssimo Sacramento do Ouro Preto (Brazil) as object of study and as a way of understanding the lay brotherhood phenomenon during the 18th century.
