Abstract: The areas destined to soybean cultivation in Brazil have had remarkable increase in the last decades. With this, the country became the world's largest exporter of this agricultural commodity. However, the externalities of the production process endanger the Cerrado's biodiversity and the country's food security. Economic returns from activity appear to have contributed to the local development of municipalities in the south-central part of the country until the effects of the Kandir law began to be realized. This study starts from the following question: what are the externalities of soybean production and its influence on the development of municipalities located in the Cerrado / Legal Amazon region of northern and northeastern Brazil? In this sense, the literature review reveals that the negative impacts of soybean on health and ecosystem services are clear. However, there is little evidence that this field of agribusiness promotes local development on Brazil's newest agricultural frontier.
