Abstract

Abstract: In this article we analyze the formation of religious brotherhoods in the constitution of the Catholic religious field of the captaincy of Mato Grosso, specifically the Prelature of Cuiabá, in the eighteenth century. In this ecclesiastical jurisdiction there was no effective action of the royal patronage policy, causing the population to cost the construction of temples and religious services. The Prelature of Cuiabá was created in 1745, subordinate to the Bishopric of Rio de Janeiro, but his position as prelate was vacant until the year 1803. The social groups of this religious field were made up of whites, Portuguese, indigenous, Africans and their enslaved or liberated descendants, situated in a society marked by the strong miscegenation and hierarchy of social groups. Religious brotherhoods represented the positions of these social groups and the need and consumption of salvation goods by the faithful.
