Abstract

This article reconstructs the historical moment of occupation and colonization of the Araguaia River valley in the second half of the 19th century. Particularly, it focuses on the actions of Catholic missionaries from the Capuchin and Dominican orders, who shaped the region as agents of both the government and as an institution of a theocratic territory within the national space. Through the analysis of reports and official documents, this study aims to shed light on this space resulting from interethnic contact that altered the region.
