Abstract

This article analyzes the establishment of an indigenous institutional apparatus because of the Mexican revolutionary process: the Dirección de Antropología, in 1917. Planned and directed by anthropologist and archaeologist Manuel Gamio, the institute was created to conduct scientific research on the territory and population of Mexico, especially the indigenous people. These studies should support public policies that would promote the incorporation of ethnic groups and the integration of the nation. Therefore, our purpose is to understand how the creation of the Dirección de Antropología represented a change in official policy towards indigenous people, which began to address this issue in the institutional field. To achieve this objective, we combine the analysis of the foundation of a new indigenous state-owned organization with the work of one of the main ideologists of Mexican indigenism.
