Abstract

This article aims to historically analyze the repercussions of the military dictatorship's political opening process on the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB). For this purpose, the text makes use of the press and the documentary evidence produced by the military dictatorship's information community. In particular, the target of the study is the general assemblies of the CNBB during the Figueiredo government, from the 17th to the 22nd, between 1979 and 1984. As a result, the article historically analyzes how the CNBB aimed to guide its project of political openness concomitantly with the one underway by the authoritarian regime, and how the CNBB's institutional reframing in relation to social and political issues occurred at the end of the military dictatorship.

Keywords: Catholic Church. Military Dictatorship. CNBB. Political Opening.
