Abstract

Through the analysis of three discourses related to the exercise of political power in 17th-century Portugal, this article aimed to illustrate the convergence between Platonism and Aristotelianism in the mentality of society at the time. This convergence was influenced by interpretations and appropriations of Thomistic philosophy. The article places special emphasis on the importance of distributive justice, government unity, and hierarchical composition as essential elements for understanding the political and social order of the period. In this context, the article explores the relationship between what is referred to as Thomistic-Aristotelianism, Platonism, and Neoplatonism during the Counter-Reformation in Portugal. It examines how these influences manifest themselves in the political discourses of the era and traces their origins back to the thinking of Saint Thomas Aquinas.

Keywords: Thomism. Hierarchy. Distributive Justice. Modern Portugal.
