Abstract

This article seeks to understand the actions of the Brazilian State, represented by the police with a specific group, that of prostitutes in the city of Rio de Janeiro, during the presidency of Juscelino Kubitschek. Through periodicals of the time, it is possible to notice the inhuman treatment given by the authorities to these subordinated individuals, in a period that was considered democratic. As a result, we find the violent actions of the police disrespecting these people's fundamental constitutional rights, but we also observe strategies and forms of organization and struggle on the part of these women, aiming to resist and, more than that, defend what they considered to be their right.

Keywords: protests. Citizenship. Violence. Prostitution.
