Abstract

This article intends to approach slave motherhood in an intersectional perspective, using as sources of analysis the ads for sale, rental and demand of wet-nurses in the newspapers correio paulistano (1870-1879) and jornal do commercio (1850-1859), as well as the discursive productions of hygienist doctors, who were concerned with sanitizing the bodies and morals of women-mothers. For the analysis of the medical discourses that were against the so-called “mercenary” breastfeeding, we used doctoral theses produced by the authors Xavier (1833), Milward (1873) and Silva (1884).

Keywords: slave motherhood. Intersectional. Wet-nurses. Hygiene.
