GALIBI MARWORNO VERSUS MILITARY:

BETWEEN FERAL BUFFALOES AND TERRITORIAL DISSEISINS IN THE CARIBBEAN AMAZON

Abstract

The article analyzes the history of deterritorialization and reterritorialization of the Galibi Marworno People in the Uaçá Indigenous Land, current municipality of  Oiapoque/AP, in te second half of the 20th century.The narratives about the invasion of the territory for the practice of extensive cattle raising comprise a history of arbitrariness and the consequent breakdown of indigneous socio-environmental arrangements, operated through a consortium between the indigenous body and the Brasilian army, with the supposed objective of providing food security for the inhabitants of the Uaçá River, through the breeding of buffaloes.The indigenous memory of the events is questioned based on historical and anthropological literature and documents from the indigenous body that deal with the subject, in contrast to the personal files of muchê Koko Tavi, deceased Elder Galibi Marworno Who experienced the process. The combination of documents demonstrates that the dispossession would only be stopped after thirty years of struggle, on the occasion of the demarcation and ratification of the T.I. Uaçá, completed in the 1990s.
