Abstract

Writing about the relations between the Chilean invasion of the Meli Wixan Mapu territories; Waj mapu or Wallmapu – in Mapudungun, through the regional press, consists of launching new perspectives on a topic marked by tensions, disputes, but also some dialogues. Our objective is to map a significant part of the debate that is structured in the main periodicals founded during the Chilean expansion towards the territories of the Wallmapu peoples, such as the Mapuche. The main hypothesis we seek to support is related to the important role of the press in creating a space for debate on the occupation of the territories of these peoples and the justification of the long process of “Pacification of Araucanía”; and the denunciations of abuses carried out by agents of the Chilean State, during the “indigenous settlement”, as well as criticism of the numerous problems with the functioning of railway lines, energy supply services, drinking water and basic sanitation; for another.
