Abstract

The aim of this work is to analyze the way André Rebouças (1838-1898), an afro Brazilian abolitionist and engineer thought about production and trade of Brazilian coffee during the 1870´s and the 1880’s. At that time, other Atlantic American countries, especially Mexico, were increasing their competition for North American market. Therefore, Rebouças tried to build an argument based on Atlantic American competition on coffee’s markets to back his proposals for abolition and for land reform in Brazil, in order to reach what he used to call a “rural democracy”, according to his book Agricultura Nacional, Estudos Econômicos. Propaganda abolicionista e democrática (1874-1883).

Keywords: André Rebouças. Rural Democracy. Abolition. Land Reform. Atlantic coffee.
