CONSIDERAÇÕES TEÓRICAS A PARTIR DE UM DEBATE CONCEITUAL ENTRE A MEMÓRIA COLETIVA E A MEMÓRIA CULTURAL

Abstract

In this article we aim, through the debate between different authors and their theorical perspectives, to reflect on the implications of using the concept of collective memory in the context of historical research. Therefore, we developed our debate by exposing topics such as the basic assumptions of the collective memory of Maurice Halbwachs and the approach of authors like Michael Pollak and Aleida Assmann about the concept. In this context, considering Joel Candau’s criticisms, the concrete existence of collective memory as data liable to analysis can be taken as something mistaken, because memory itself would constitute an atribute that comprises knowledge and information inaccessible to more than one individual. Consequently, we propose in this article the use of the concept of cultural memory, addressed by Aleida Assmann, as an alternative theorical term to collective memory to be called a “group memory”.
