Abstract

England witnessed during the 1920s and 1930s the rise of small fascist groups such as the British Union of Fascists (BUF). During this period, the economic effects of the Great Depression strongly impacted the country's agriculture, generating a political debate on solutions to the crisis. In this context, fascism presents itself as the solution to these possible economic problems. This article analyzes how Punch magazine's cartoons portrayed the BUF's advance in the agrarian sector and reflected the reception of this movement in the English social imaginary.  Using the documentary method of Ralf Bohnsack, adapted to the interpretation of cartoons by Vinícius Liebel, a specific cartoon was selected for analysis. The research seeks to establish a dialogue between the Cultural History of the Political and Sociology, based on the authors Pierre Rosanvallon and Michael Mann. The objective is to understand how this specific cartoon reflects the imagination of the English population in relation to the BUF, especially in the liberal-conservative context in which the magazine was inserted.
