Abstract

This article analyzes the persistence of authoritarian practices and discourses in contemporary Brazil in light of the 2023 coup attempt, drawing parallels with the 1964 civil-military coup. The research adopts a critical historiographical and sociological approach, grounded in authors such as Florestan Fernandes, Halbwachs, and Benjamin, to understand how collective memory, political culture, and discourses of exception function as tools for legitimizing authoritarianism. Through the documentary analysis of the so-called "coup draft" and the actions of parliamentarians such as Carla Zambelli and Daniel Silveira, the study reveals the sophistication of current authoritarian mechanisms, which seek to cloak democratic rupture in legal legitimacy. The investigation demonstrates that the militarist imaginary remains active, sustained by institutional omissions during the democratic transition and by weak memory policies. It concludes that the defense of democracy requires structured public actions of critical memory, effective transitional justice, and symbolic confrontation of revisionist narratives.
