Abstract

This study aims to analyze the academic production that refers to the relationship between modes of production, technical development and colonial and imperial Brazilian slavery. We will present some of the main conceptions of the foreign debate about modes of production and the transition processes. Then, We will broach the national debate about mode of production and slavery in colony and empire Brazil. To do this, we will use some of the reference works in order to provide an overview of what has been discussed in this regard. In the end, we will learn that free workforce and slave workforce co-existed in the manufacturing establishments of Rio de Janeiro in the Nineteenth century, and may have participated in the teaching and learning processes that were developed in these spaces.
