Abstract

Joaquim José de Oliveira (1820-1872), was one of the pioneers in the historiographical work of Sergipe in the 19th century. Graduated in Medicine at Faculdade da Bahia and a member of the provincial bureaucratic body, throughout the third quarter of the 19th century he scoured the government archives and invested in historical writing, in texts such as “Histórias Perdas”, “Apontamentos para a História de Sergipe” and “Boundaries of Sergipe with Bahia”. In this article I operate these works in order to analyze the conception of history mobilized by Joaquim José de Oliveira and how the uses of the past were questioned in the dispute over the issue of boundaries between provinces.
