In this paper we will present how Brazilian society is conceived in two historical works by Nelson Werneck Sodré, considered to be one of the main Brazilian Marxist intellectuals: Formação da sociedade brasileira (1944) and Formação histórica do Brasil (1962). Due to the conceptual differences between the two works and the time gap between them, it can be observed that there was a transition from an organicist image of Brazil to the affirmation of the existence of different and simultaneous modes of production in the country, the thesis for which the author is best known. At the same time, the persistence of the concept of formation reveals certain perennialities in Sodré's historiographical project and its relations with Brazilian historiography of the period, aspects that the reflections of Koselleck and other authors help us to elucidate.
