Characterization of the biotechnological potentials of Momordica charantia Linn.

Abstract

Momordica charantia L. is popularly used as an antibacterial, anthelmintic, antiviral, antioxidant, healing agent, in addition to being used as an auxiliary drug for type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Therefore, the present study aimed to portray biological activity and possible biotechnological applications of M. charantia. A systematic bibliographic search was carried out, with the search for articles in the SciELO, PubMed, CAPES and ScienceDirect databases, published between 2010-2019. Studies have shown that the plant can be used for the development of cosmetic products, nutraceuticals, auxiliary drugs, mainly antiviral and hepatoprotective, in addition to being able to be used for aesthetic applications, manufacture of nutricosmetics and skin adhesives, with potential for the development of products based on in nanotechnology. Therefore, the importance of characterizing a vegetable is perceived in order to obtain new drugs using more advanced technologies to ensure population well-being, promoting health.
