Abstract

On the northern coast of the State of Pernambuco, the Botafogo hydrographic basin extends for about 480 km². In the region is the only water reservoir on the North Coast of the State, integrated to the water supply system of the Metropolitan Region of Recife. Sugarcane is the predominant agricultural activity in the region and among the environmental impacts caused by this activity is the contamination of water resources and soil by pesticides commonly used in these crops. The incidence of the herbicide Ametrina in water bodies, cited in the Botafogo basin, was evaluated. A liquid chromatograph with a mass spectrometer was used to quantify the results. The results prove the contamination of water bodies by the use of the herbicide Ametrina, and for this chemical, there is no maximum limit allowed in Consolidation Ordinance No. 5 - MS/2017. The study allows for reflection on legislation with the aim of improving the monitoring of water bodies in Brazil.
