Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use Policy

1. Purpose

Atâtôt – Interdisciplinary Journal of Human Rights (State University of Goiás – UEG) acknowledges that Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly generative AI technologies, can contribute to scientific research and scholarly communication when used ethically, responsibly, and transparently.

This policy establishes guidelines for the use of AI tools during the preparation, submission, peer review, and publication of manuscripts, ensuring compliance with the principles of research integrity, transparency, authorship responsibility, and editorial confidentiality.

These guidelines are aligned with the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), internationally recognized publishing best practices.

2. General Principles

The use of AI tools is permitted as a support resource for research and scientific writing, provided that:

  • authors retain full responsibility for the manuscript;
  • the use of AI is transparently disclosed whenever it substantially contributes to the preparation of the manuscript;
  • AI systems are not credited as authors or co-authors;
  • the use of AI does not compromise originality, scientific rigor, data reliability, or research integrity.

3. Use of AI by Authors

Authors may use AI tools to assist with:

  • grammar, spelling, and language editing;
  • translation;
  • reference management and information organization;
  • programming, data analysis, or data visualization;
  • drafting or improving the structure of manuscripts.

All AI-assisted content must be carefully reviewed and validated by the authors before submission.

Authors remain fully responsible for:

  • the accuracy of all data and information;
  • the originality of the manuscript;
  • the correctness of citations and references;
  • the interpretation of results and conclusions;
  • compliance with ethical and scientific standards.

The use of AI does not transfer any scientific, ethical, or legal responsibility from the authors.

4. Disclosure of AI Use

Whenever generative AI tools significantly contribute to the preparation of a manuscript, authors must include a section entitled "Declaration of Artificial Intelligence Use" immediately before the References.

The declaration should specify:

  • the AI tool used;
  • its intended purpose;
  • the stage of the research in which it was employed;
  • confirmation that all AI-generated or AI-assisted content was critically reviewed by the authors.

During the preparation of this manuscript, the authors used ChatGPT (OpenAI) to assist with language revision and improvement of textual clarity. All AI-assisted content was carefully reviewed and validated by the authors, who assume full responsibility for the scientific content of this work.

The routine use of spelling or grammar checkers integrated into word-processing software does not require disclosure.

5. Use of AI by Reviewers

The peer-review process is confidential.

Reviewers must not upload manuscripts, datasets, tables, figures, or any confidential editorial material to external AI platforms capable of storing, learning from, or redistributing submitted content.

AI tools may only be used to improve the language or readability of the review itself, provided that manuscript confidentiality is strictly maintained.

Scientific evaluation and editorial recommendations remain the sole responsibility of the reviewer.

6. Use of AI by Editors

Editors may use AI tools exclusively to support editorial and administrative activities, such as language revision, document organization, or preliminary information management.

Editorial decisions, reviewer selection, ethical assessment, and final publication decisions shall always be made by members of the editorial team.

7. Restrictions

The following practices are prohibited:

  • listing AI systems as authors or co-authors;
  • presenting AI-generated content as entirely human-created without proper disclosure;
  • fabricating or manipulating data, images, documents, or research findings using AI;
  • generating fictitious or unverifiable references;
  • using AI to replace the scientific judgment required during peer review;
  • uploading confidential manuscripts or editorial documents to AI systems that may compromise confidentiality.

8. Non-Compliance

Failure to comply with this policy may result in:

  • requests for clarification;
  • return of the manuscript for correction;
  • rejection of the submission;
  • retraction of published articles, where appropriate;
  • any additional editorial measures deemed necessary to preserve research integrity.

9. Policy Updates

This policy may be revised periodically to reflect advances in Artificial Intelligence technologies, developments in research integrity standards, and recommendations issued by national and international scientific publishing organizations.
