Abstract

This article propose a reflection on two dimensions of monuments, which are understood as heritage. The first dimension refers to its founding audacity, as its construction is associated with the idea of transmitting a symbolic message and proposing a biased narrative about the past or about an ideology. However, despite the founding audacity, we see the possibility of a second dimension, which is the contestation, marked by the fact that the symbolic narratives imposed by the forces that erected the monuments are being questioned, either by historical revisionism or by issues of a nature ideological. As a basis for the essentially epistemological reflection proposed here, we use assumptions aligned with the new cultural geography. We point out, however, that the reflection on landscape symbolism focused only on the dimension of class relations is limited. Finally, we advise that approaches that penetrate the field of affective and identity relationships can present themselves as capable of filling the gaps of approaches based on class analysis.
